GE4: Is Irritability causing Bad temper?

Hi Friends,

Have you sometimes felt irritated by someone or something? How do you know you are irritated? Are you speaking in a raised high pitched voice, with impatient gesture, snapping at people for trying to be humorous? Or have you noticed someone who displays moderately aggressive communication verbal and non verbal?
When people encounter roadblocks and rejection once too often, they tend to become indifferent to protect themselves from feeling the pain of being let down. As explained in my previous article if this is ignored irritability starts setting in.

People become irritable towards each and every situation they face. Every task is burdensome for them, they try to brush off their responsibility. Now this acts a self fulfilling prophecy. The more irritated the person gets the more problems they face, because of the spill over effect.

In order to deal with this feeling of irritability try out these tips:

1. Be an observer in the situation, detach yourself for a while.
2. Approach every other situation as if it is the first time you are approaching it.
3. Look at the issue that you need to deal with as something that requires your special inputs and expertise.
4. If you feel irritation slowly creeping in on you, become aware and check it before it takes over rational thought.
5. Remember if you get irritated, that it will be pervasive and could affect all your relationships, personal and professional.
6. Read or listen to peaceful and calming words and music, repeat a small quote or a short prayer and breathe.

At any rate try to get this feeling under control, as soon as you can. Don’t suppress it, rather channelise it according to the steps mentioned above. If left unattended this irritablility will grow into frustration. My next post will deal with frustration and steps to deal with it.
